10 Web Designers Create a Resume
10 Web Designers Create a Resume 10 Web Designers Create a Resume The Web Design Source had a really cool contest to see what 10 great designers would do with the same persons resume.Click through to see all the designs, but here are my personal favorites(Note this is an English website, so theyre including some personal info that would be a no-no here in the US, such as birth date and marital status). The post also includes some great resume tips, all of which I agree with, but I do have a couple of concerns about unterstellung resumes1) Unless Steven has a version in MS Word, or text only, his resume wont work with applicant tracking systems. This means his data wont be found 3 months from now when the HR department needs to hire a designer, and scans the database for candidates.2) The focus of this contest was on visual appeal. The contestants werent actually given enough information to write strong content. (You can see the rules here). A strong resume should communicate what make s you different. How are you uniquely valuable? What impact has your design work had on your employers/clients? Has it increased sales? Driven leads? Improved conversion? Unlike most professionals, web designers are able to measure the impact of almost everything they do. A resume that doesnt communicate that impact is an ineffective one no matter how pretty it looks. My own advice to web designers is to create a practical, easy-to-read, impact-filled resume in MS Word (heres an example) and then go a little crazy on a PDF version that demonstrates your design skills. When you apply for a position by email, send both. That way you are sure to make the most of all the opportunities available to you.Check out the rest of the designs here and let me know what you think.

Veterans Day - Armistice Day - Honoring All Who Served
Veterans Day - Armistice Day - Honoring All Who ServedVeterans Day - Armistice Day - Honoring All Who ServedMany Americans mistakenly believe that Veterans Day is the day America sets aside to honor American military personnel who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained from combat. Thats not quite true. Memorial Day is the day set aside to honor Americas war dead. Veterans Day, on the other hand, honors ALL American veterans, both living and dead. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for dedicated and loyal service to their country. November 11 of each year is the day that we ensure veterans know that we deeply appreciate the sacrifices they have made in the lives to keep our country free. Armistice Day To commemorate the ending of the Great War (World War I), an unknown soldier was buried in thehighest distributionspolitik of honor in both England and France (in England, Westminster Abbey in France, the Arc de Triomphe). These ceremonie s took place on November 11th, celebrating the ending of World War I hostilities at 11 a.m., November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). This day became known internationally as Armistice Day. In 1921, the United States of America followed France and England by laying to rest the remains of a World War I American soldier his personenname known but to God on a Virginia hillside overlooking the city of Washington DC and the Potomac River. This site became known as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and today is called the Tomb of the Unknowns. Located in Arlington National Cemetery, the tomb symbolizes dignity and reverence for the American veteran. In America, November 11th officially became known as Armistice Day through an act of Congress in 1926. It wasnt until 12 years later through a similar act that Armistice Day became a national holiday. The entire World thought that World War I was the War to end all wars. Had this been true, the holiday might still be called Armistice Day today. That dream was shattered in 1939 when World War II broke out in Europe. mora than 400,000 American service members died during that horrific war. Veterans Day Creation In 1954, President Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Dayand called upon Americans everywhere to rededicate themselves to the cause of peace. He issued a Presidential Order directing the head of the Veterans Administration (now called the Department of Veterans Affairs) to form a Veterans Day National Committee to organize and oversee the national observance of Veterans Day. Veterans Day National Ceremony At exactly 11 a.m., each November 11th, a color guard, made up of members from each of the military branches, renders honors to Americas war dead during a heart-moving ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery. The President or his representative places a wreath at the Tomb and a bugler sounds Taps. The balance of the ceremony, inc luding a Parade of Flags by numerous veterans service organizations, takes place inside the Memorial Amphitheater, adjacent to the Tomb. In addition to planning and coordinating the National Veterans Day Ceremony, the Veterans Day National Committee supports a number of Veterans Day Regional Sites. These sites conduct Veterans Day celebrations that provide excellent examples for other communities to follow. Veterans Day Observance Veterans Day is always observed on November 11, regardless of the day of the week on which it falls. The Veterans Day National Ceremony is always held on Veterans Day itself, even if the holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday. However, like all other federal holidays, when it falls on a non-workday Saturday or Sunday the federal government employees take the day off on Monday (if the holiday falls on Sunday) or Friday (if the holiday falls on Saturday). This federal law does not apply to state and local governments. They are free to determine local go vernment closings (including school closings) locally. As such, there is no legal requirement that schools close on Veterans Day, and many do not. However, most schools hold Veterans Day activities on Veterans Day and throughout the week of the holiday to honor American veterans. Allied Veterans Day Around the World Many other countries honor their veterans on November 11th of each year. However, the name of the holiday and the types of ceremonies differ from the Veterans Day activities in the United States. Canada, Australia, and Great Britain refer to their holidays as Remembrance Day. Canada and Australia observe the day on November 11, and Great Britain conducts their ceremonies on the Sunday nearest to November 11th. In Canada, the observance of Remembrance Day is actually quite similar to the United States in that the day is set aside to honor all of Canadas veterans, both living and dead. One notable difference is that many Canadians wear a red poppy flower on November 11 to honor their war dead, while the red poppy tradition is observed in the United States on Memorial Day. In Australia, Remembrance Day is very much like Americas Memorial Day, in that its considered a day to honor Australian veterans who died in war. In Great Britain, the day is commemorated by church services and parades of ex-service members in Whitehall, a wide ceremonial avenue leading from Londons Parliament Square to Trafalgar Square. Wreaths of poppies are left at the Cenotaph, a war memorial in Whitehall, which was built after the First World War. At the Cenotaph and elsewhere in the country, a two-minute silence is observed at 11 a.m., to honor those who lost their lives in wars.

ASME Thanks its Volunteers, Launches New Program for ASME Group LeadersASME volunteers, like those shown here at the recent ASME Group Leadership Development Conference in Orlando, Fla., are responsible for organizing programs and activities that benefit ASMEs general membership.Since April has been designated National Volunteer Month in the United States, ASME would like to take this opportunity to thank the thousands of members throughout the world who generously devote their time and expertise in support of the Society and its programs and activities. As an organization whose success depends upon the dedicated service of its committed volunteers, ASME truly values the contributions of unterstellung volunteers who champion the Societys current endeavors and ensure its future vitality. The work of ASME volunteers benefits the Societys general membership, making possible not only major events such as the International Mechanical Engineering Congress and ausgesetztsein (IMECE), the Annual Meeting and the Societys new Engineering Festival (E-Fest) program, but also local ASME activities including section meetings, dinners, workshops, and technical tours. ASMEs volunteers are also the driving force behind the development of the Societys internationally recognized codes and standards.ASME owes a debt of gratitude to its volunteers throughout the world, without whose tireless service we would not be able to function as a world-class engineering organization, said Phil Hamilton, interim executive director of ASME. The celebration of National Volunteer Month seems like the ideal time for ASME staff to thank the Societys many volunteers who are truly the lifeblood of the organization and recognize them for their help and support of ASMEs activities, programs and mission. Nearly 200 Society volunteers convened last month for the first ASME Group Leadership Development Conference (GLDC), during which members of ASMEs Group Engagement Committee and staff from the Group Pathwa ys and Support (GPS) provided volunteers at the group level with advice on how to ensure the success of their respective ASME groups. The conference also provided attendees who were leaders from ASME sections, technical divisions and research committees with a venue where they could meet and network with their colleagues and peers. The event, which was held March 2-4 in Orlando, Fla., was devised as a place where group leaders could feel engaged with each other and ASME, become better informed about the workings of the Society, and better understand their role within the organization and how they can help move their groups and the organization forward. The conference kicked off with a forum where attendees learned about the Societys strategic planning efforts, followed by sessions that focused on best practices for ASME group operations, assessing and increasing the success of technical divisions and sections, and ways that ASME sections, divisions and committees could improve diver sity within their membership. Volunteers who attended the GLDC also had the chance to ask representatives from ASME staff about the reorganization of the Societys group structure that has been taking place over the past few years and find out how these changes within the Society will affect their respective groups. Minimize the Cost of Employee Turnover. Hire a Virtual Assistant.
Minimize the Cost of Employee Turnover. Hire a Virtual Assistant. There are many benefits to hiring an in-house employee, but cost isnttypically one of them. For small and midsize businesses, the costs associated with a full-time employee can be a deterrent to hiring, even when the current staffis stretched thin and business is growing.Unfortunately, its evenmore damaging to a businesss bottom line to lose an employee. The Cost of Employee Turnover Experts Weigh InChristina Merhar of Zane Benefitscites aSHMRstudy that found replacing a salaried employee costs 6-9 months worth of that employees salary on average. She also notes aCAP studythat found the average costs of replacing employees are16 percent of annual salary for high-turnover, low-paying jobs (earning under $30,000 a year). For example, the cost to replace a $10/hour retail employee would be $3,328.20 percent of annual salary for mid-range positions (earning $30,000-50,000 a year). For exampl e, the cost to replace a $40,000 manager would be $8,000.Up to 213 percent of annual salary for highly educated executive positions. For example, the cost to replace a $100,000 CEO is $213,000.Karlyn Borysenko of Zen Workplace states,When you consider all of the costs associated with employee turnover including interviewing, hiring, training, reduced productivity, yperit opportunity costs, etc. heres what it really costs an organizationFor entry-level employees, it costs between 30-50 percent of their annual salary to replace them. For mid-level employees, it costs upwards of 150 percent of their annual salary to replace them. For high-level or highly specialized employees, youre looking at 400 percent of their annual salary.Obviously, it pays to hire well and retain better.Sales Support In House vs. VirtualConsider the costs associated with hiring in-house schlussverkauf support. If this hire is a mid-level employee, the totalcost will be about150 percent of their salary. Costs for advertising, screening, interviewing, lost productivity (if the new hire is replacing someone), benefits, taxes, IT infrastructure and support, facility costs, work computers, and more are all included in the price you must pay an in-house employee.Compare that to the cost of hiring a virtual assistant. When you hire a virtual assistant, all of their costs are rolled into one price, which is generally 50-75 percent of the in-house cost. Its perfectly feasible to hire a virtual assistant who can work remotely to build your sales pipeline for a competitive price. However, most virtual assistants who function in a sales capacity typically do so as remote sales assistants or sales development representatives who can prospect, update your CRM, manage your email inbox, schedule meetings and follow-ups, make and answer calls, and do more in direct support of an account executive (AE).Some companies hire internal sales development reps (SDRs), but this practice is inherently flawed for a v ariety of reasons, not the least of which is inefficiency due to competition between the SDR and the AE. The way this practice currently works is also inefficient because outside sales executives spend just 22 percent of their time actively selling due to their ongoing administrative needs. Offloading sales administrative work to a virtual assistant allows an account executive to focus on closing deals, which has a dramatic impact on a companys ROI.Aint Nobody Got Time for That Oversight vs. the Hands-Off ApproachAnotherin-house employee cost that often goes overlooked is management. When you hire an in-house employee, an in-house team or individual must be responsible for developing and guiding the processes for that employee, which can add an additional 20 percentto your annual in-house cost. These costs can be offset by hiring a virtual assistant through a managed tafelgeschirr provider, which can take the following tasks off an employers plateRecruiting Managed service providers identify, assess, screen, and hire candidates for the role.Training They ensure that their virtual assistants are experienced with the tools and processes needed to support your business.Personal Development They provide feedback, development coaching, and mentorship.Turnover They maintain trained backups and manage transitions.Bottom Line Strategic Benefits of Virtual HiresUsing a managed service provider to make a virtual hire gives you a number of strategic benefits, with process improvements providing a significant ROI even on their ownScalability You can scale more quickly and better match costs to business needs.Best Practices Managed service providersleverage insights from similar clients on processes and technology solutions.Process Documentation Managed service providersfocus on process to delegate the work. This ensures that you are documenting and improving processes that are otherwise generally deprioritized.Focus When you focus on core competencies instead of hiring su pport, your company remains nimble and can execute more efficiently. The widespread use of virtual assistants has redefined the ecosystem of work and the boundaries of business. Technology is the happy culprit. Advances in tech have allowed members of the workforce to access each other remotely and collaborate using cutting-edge tools likevideo conferencing, group communication, and cloud-based storage. The best virtual assistants have clearly defined roles and know what is expected of them. Some argue that there are inherent company culture riskswhen hiring a virtual assistant, but this really depends on your business needs. When you hire virtual assistants from managed service providers, they are already employees embedded in a company culture. There should be no issue with them feeling like they arent a part of a team, because they are already.Deena Anreise is the marketing manager at Prialto, a Portland-based business that provides managed, dedicated virtual assistants to executiv es, entrepreneurs, and companies of all sizes.
